In our excitement to get started it is easy to start an online business without considering what needs to be done before hand. It is a good idea to stop and think about this so I have outlined 7 things you need to consider before you actually set up an online business.

1.  What service or product will you want to provide?

Many people decide to start an online business based on knowledge and experience that they have already, while others may decide to search out the hotest topics and choose an online business based on that.
Research is YOUR NUMBER ONE priority. Miss it out and I can guarantee your business will NOT prosper.  If you have tried to run an online business before and have not succeeded did you carry out niche research? This step is CRUICAL to your success.

Do as much reading and research on everything you can about particular areas of interest, as well as studying the pros and cons that this will have in relation to your overall goals.  Spend some time making yourself familiar with your competitors, check out what they do and how you can add value to make your online business even better.

2.  At home or not at home – this is the question

An online business can be set up in any part of your home but you may want to pick a place where you will be able to concentrate – away from the television if possible.   You should arrange to have all the necessary equipment that you will need such as a computer, internet connection, and printer.  These are just a few things that you will need if you want to be successful with your online business.

4.  An Online Business Needs A Plan

An online business without a plan is like taking a drive to a location that is 400 miles away without a map! You will get lost quickly and end up frustrated. Having a plan or vision for your business is cruical, even if it is only a page long – at least it is a start. As your online business grows so will your plan

Without having a blueprint on how to reach your goals, you may find that not just your efforts, but the resources may well be squandered.  Having a plan provides you with focus, direction and momentum to keep the business on track.

5.  Check Laws and Regulations

You MUST register to pay tax. At the very least as soon as you begin making money you must register. It is important that you check to see if there are any other local laws or regulations in relation to setting up an online business from home.  You will need to notify your home insurance company if you decide to work from home because it might make a difference to your policy.
